I Hired an Expert And It Changed Everything

I am the kind of person who likes to figure things out on my own. Google it. Research it. Read every article. Watch every video.  I am a strong, independent, first-born daughter… I can handle it.

So when I started looking into applying for my Portuguese visa, I thought, “okay, how hard can this be?” Um… very.

I didn’t even know which visa I qualified for. D7? D8? Digital nomad visa?

I was reading government websites, trying to decode legal language, convincing myself I could piece it all together if I just spent enough time on it. But the more I researched, the more confused I got. I wasn’t even sure I fit into any of the categories.

And that’s when the stress started creeping in. Because this isn’t just paperwork, this is my future. This is me building a life in Portugal. There was no way I wanted to mess this up or risk getting denied because I missed something.

But still… I kept thinking, “I can figure this out.” Until I finally decided to talk to an expert and within one conversation, everything changed.

She told me I qualified for the D2 freelancer visa. I had no idea that was even an option. Just like that, I had direction. Instead of guessing, I knew exactly what path I was on. And then she walked me through everything I needed to do. The steps, the timeline, what mattered, what didn’t.

Here’s the thing — even if I technically could figure some of this out on my own, it doesn’t mean it’s easy. Getting a NIF number? Nearly impossible without knowing a Portuguese resident. Opening a bank account in another language? Please help me. Making sure every document is correct and my application is strong? Not something I want to hope I did right. And once my visa is approved, I’ll need to meet with Portuguese authorities to get my residency card and she’ll be there with me to translate and guide me through it.

That level of support? Game changing.

After that call, I felt something I hadn’t felt in weeks, relief. I went from overwhelmed and unsure to hopeful. I could actually see my future again. I could breathe. I could start imagining what my life in Portugal will look like instead of stressing about how to get there.

And maybe the best part? I don’t have to do it alone anymore. I’m supported through every step, all the way until I have that residency card in my hand. That peace of mind is priceless.

And of course, this got me thinking about business, because I see this exact pattern all the time. Business owners trying to do everything themselves. Figuring out branding on Canva, piecing together a website, posting content without a clear strategy. Not because they want to, but because they think they should be able to. “I’m smart, I can figure it out.”  “I’ll just Google it.”  “I’ll fix it later.” Sound familiar?

But here’s the reality. Just because you can do something yourself doesn’t mean you should.

What you’re actually doing is slowing yourself down, second-guessing every decision, creating more stress than necessary, and staying stuck in confusion longer than you need to.

Clarity is what moves you forward and clarity comes a lot faster when you have the right person guiding you.

Hiring an expert isn’t about not being capable, it’s about deciding you don’t want to do it the hard way anymore. It’s about getting it right the first time, feeling confident in your decisions, and having someone in your corner who knows exactly what they’re doing.

That’s exactly how I want my clients to feel when they work with me. Clear, confident, and supported.

Your brand, your design, your content, that’s your application to your audience. If they’re unclear, inconsistent, or thrown together, you’re making it harder for people to trust you. You don’t want to hope your brand is working, you want to know it is.

So if you’ve been trying to do everything yourself in your business, consider this your sign. You don’t have to. And honestly? You’re not supposed to.
